I Paid $ 300 for a Personal Colour Analysis in Korea

Subtitle: Discovering My Personal Style and Colours

Hey guys, it's your girl Tina here! Welcome back to my channel. In today's video, I booked a personal colour consultation in Korea. Join me as I find my personal shades through a thorough colour analysis.

Personal colour analysis, also known as colour consulting, is a popular service in South Korea for those who want to improve their overall appearance and feel more confident in their styling. It's a great way to figure out which colours enhance your natural features and complement your skin tone, so you know exactly what colours to wear when it comes to clothing, makeup, hair, and nails.

This had been high on my bucket list for the longest time, and after researching several options, I decided to book a session with Dust Moth Photography, which came highly recommended. During my session, I met with Ginny, the founder of Dust Moth, who has been an expert in colour consulting for the last 13 years.

The consultation was conducted in Korean, so I brought a friend along to help me translate. Before we began, I had to remove my foundation so that Ginny could analyze my skin tone. This is important because the whole basis of personal colour analysis is determined by your natural skin tone. Ginny then scanned my skin with a colour scanner, which measures how light or dark my skin tone is and how much red and yellow it contains.

Compared to most of Ginny's Korean clients, my skin tone was darker and contained more yellow, which indicated a warmer undertone. She compared my results to a cooler undertone to help me see the difference.

With the results in mind, Ginny moved on to explain the basics of personal colour analysis. Everyone's skin tone is unique and influenced by various factors such as sun exposure, environment, lifestyle habits, and genetics. The personal colour system takes into account these differences and categorizes skin tones into seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. However, at Dust Moth, these seasons are further divided into eight categories to provide a more comprehensive colour analysis.

By identifying the colours that complement each individual's skin tone, the personal colour analysis helps create a personalized style and colour guide. Here's a breakdown of the eight categories:

  1. Spring Light: associated with warm, light colours like corals, peaches, yellows, and greens.
  2. Spring Bright: vibrant and vivid warm colours. Some light colours are bright cool-toned colours like pastel pinks, lavender, and sky blues.
  3. Summer Mutes: toned-down cool-toned colours that have a gray undertone, like dusty rose and violet.
  4. Autumn Mutes: deeper warm colours that give off a vintage feel, think autumn leaves and fallen foliage.
  5. Autumn Deep: warm-toned colours like dark reds, rich browns, maroons, and deep khaki greens.
  6. Winter Bright: vivid, intense colours that are clear and cool-toned with a lot of contrast and saturation. These include primary colours like true red, cobalt blue, bright lemon yellow, as well as magenta and jewel-tone colours.
  7. Winter Dark: cool-toned colours with a high level of contrast and saturation, making them appear bold and striking. These colours include deep burgundy, midnight blue, forest greens, and black.

Since I have a warm undertone, I could fall under either spring or autumn. To determine which season, Ginny moved on to the next step, which is colour draping. This is where she drapes different coloured fabric swatches across my chest and shoulders to see which colours bring out my features best.

Before we continue, I'd like to give a quick thanks to today's sponsor, Mason de Tay, an aroma brand from Seoul, Korea. They offer carefully crafted scents that are changing the game in the world of fabric perfumes and room sprays. Now, back to the video. We started with the brightness test to determine what level of lightness or darkness suits me best. As Ginny flipped through the colours, you could see how it affected my face. We found that I suit darker colours more compared to lighter shades. The perfect colour for me was charcoal, as it had the right amount of darkness to complement my skin tone. Black wasn't so bad, but she thought charcoal brought out my features more.

I was surprised to learn that dark brown looks better on me than black. After seeing the comparison against black, I agreed that brown brought out my features best. Ginny also mentioned that I definitely suit warm tones.

Next, we moved on to determining which shades suited me in each hue. We tested various colours including greens, purples, blues, reds, pinks, yellows, and more. Ginny carefully compared different shades within each colour category to see which ones complemented my skin tone the best.

After thorough testing, Ginny determined that I most likely fall into the "Autumn Deep" category. These are earthy tones like deep reds, chocolate browns, and dark greens. These colours make my skin look brighter and complement my natural features the best.

Throughout the consultation, Ginny also provided recommendations for makeup, jewellery, hair colour, and even scents that would match my overall colour palette and vibe. We determined that darker brown hair looks best on me, and jewellery in rose gold and 14k gold suits me the most.

Overall, my experience with Dust Moth was fantastic. The consultation was thorough and took about three hours. I learned so much about my personal colour palette and what kind of makeup, jewellery, and hair colour looks best on me. The whole session cost me 300,000 won, approximately 230 dollars U.S., but it was totally worth it. I feel much more confident now about my style, and I can't wait to try out Ginny's recommendations.

If you're ever in Korea, I highly recommend trying out a personal colour analysis. It's a great investment to discover your personal style and ensure that you're wearing the colours that enhance your natural features. Let me know in the comments if you would try this service out.
