Creator Spotlight Series: Alexis Nikole on TikTok

Alexis Nikole

TikTok is a home for creators to share their passions with others and grow a community around their interests. Through our Creator Spotlight Series, an ongoing feature series highlighting our inspiring creatives, we're able to showcase these amazing creators teaching others and sharing a part of their world on the platform each day. Next up in the series is @alexisnikole, a creator sharing her knowledge and passion for foraging, a practice of searching for food resources in the wild. Alexis uses her channel to detail how foraging is important to her culture, as well as simple tips and tricks for finding edible plants and cooking what she finds, all with a lighthearted and comedic lens.

Getting Started on TikTok

Alexis started her TikTok account in early 2020 to get a better feel for the app. Her first video was a short clip about her messed up sleep schedule. Initially, she was still figuring out her content and had no idea how combining her love for comedy, storytelling, cooking, and plants would turn out.

Why TikTok is the Right Platform

According to Alexis, TikTok provides great tools for creating engaging content and offers quick growth opportunities. Unlike other platforms, TikTok allows creators to focus more on the content rather than chasing new viewers. This is one of the reasons why she continues to create and share on TikTok.

Favorite TikTok Videos

One of Alexis' favorite TikToks is the Poison Hemlock vs Queen Anne's Lace comparison. She believes it's important for everyone to learn the difference between these two plants, as many people have confused them in the past. Another favorite is her seaweed dessert video, which involved extensive research and allowed her to share a fun experiment in her kitchen with the world.

What Lights a Fire in Alexis

Alexis is passionate about the accessibility of knowledge, especially for those who don't believe it's meant for them. She enjoys showing the Black community, in particular, that outdoor spaces are accessible to them and that they are just as much theirs as they are for everyone else.

Advice for New Creators

Alexis advises new creators to bring their whole selves to their content and not compartmentalize themselves. She believes that when you let your different interests come together, they form a complete puzzle that resonates with your audience.

Being a Trailblazer

To Alexis, being a trailblazer means having the opportunity to show people, especially Black individuals, that they can be outdoorsy, nerdy, and showcase different sides of themselves without detracting from their blackness. Her goal is to help people feel more comfortable in their skin through her content.

Black Creators to Follow

Alexis recommends following @inyonifelix, who teaches about California indigenous culture, @rynnstar, who is smart, funny, and patient, and @ladyyasmina1, who creates relatable and hilarious content.
