Creator Spotlight: Mya Pol
Next up on our Creator Spotlight series is Mya Pol, also known as @immarollwithit on TikTok. Mya is a disabled creator who spreads joy and positivity through dance and sharing her experiences. She is a proud member of the Black community and embraces her identity while acknowledging the presence of racism. As a Black woman adopted into a white family, Mya had to navigate her own journey of connecting with her Black heritage and community. Despite facing comments about her hair in predominantly white schools, Mya learned to love and embrace her natural curls and other protective styles, which helped her connect with more people in her community and with herself. She actively seeks Black joy and celebrates the beauty and power within the Black community.
The TikTok community has been a great source of inspiration for Mya. When her dog passed away, she turned to TikTok to fundraise for a service dog to assist with her disability. The response was overwhelming, and she was able to raise $20k through her GoFundMe in just a few months. Mya is amazed by the power and support she has received from the platform. She has also connected with other advocates who inspire and educate her, and she has found love and support from many TikTok users.
On and off TikTok, Mya's passions include dancing and creating new dance routines that feel good for her body. She also enjoys creating educational content to combat ignorance around disabilities. Mya believes in being the change she wants to see in the world. Outside of TikTok, she is actively involved in advocacy work, campaigning for inclusion and physical access at her university. She also enjoys painting, playing the piano, spending time in nature, and soaking in the sunshine.
Mya identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and is passionate about mental health. She enjoys discussing her journey and perspective on life, which has helped her navigate her disability. She also finds inspiration in the TravelTok community, as she loves exploring beautiful destinations. Mya hopes to partner with a travel agency to promote accessible travel. Additionally, she is a fan of the dog training community on TikTok and enjoys seeing all the adorable puppies.
To be better allies, Mya emphasizes the importance of listening, understanding, amplifying, and supporting disabled voices in tangible ways. She highlights the lack of awareness regarding disabled needs and encourages individuals to take action in their communities to create meaningful change for accessibility. This can include calling out businesses that are not accessible or lack ramps.
