Introducing TikTok's Content Advisory Council

TikTok has formed a Content Advisory Council consisting of technology and safety experts to shape their content moderation policies. The council will be led by Dawn Nunziato, a professor at George Washington University Law School and co-director of the Global Internet Freedom Project. Dawn specializes in issues involving free speech and content regulation and brings valuable knowledge to guide the council.

The initial members of the council include:

  • Rob Atkinson from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation
  • Hany Farid from the University of California, Berkeley
  • Mary Anne Franks from the University of Miami Law School
  • Vicki Harrison from Stanford Psychiatry Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Dawn Nunziato from George Washington University Law School
  • David Ryan Polgar from All Tech Is Human
  • Dan Schnur from USC Annenberg Center on Communication and UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies

These experts will provide insights and guidance on various topics relevant to TikTok and the broader technology landscape.

The council will meet regularly to discuss important issues, with the first meeting focusing on platform integrity, including policies against misinformation and election interference. TikTok understands the importance of ensuring integrity and promoting authenticity around civic engagement. They have already implemented several measures, such as banning political ads, detecting and removing deepfakes, enabling users to report misleading information, and partnering with fact-checking organizations. However, they want to evaluate their actions and seek guidance on additional measures from the council.

TikTok remains committed to creating an entertaining and genuine experience for their community. As the company grows, they value reflection, learning, and transparency. Through thought-provoking conversations and candid feedback, they aim to support platform integrity, counter potential misuse, and protect the interests of all their users.

TikTok is grateful for the expertise and contribution of the Content Advisory Council members and looks forward to their guidance as they continue to strengthen their content moderation policies and platform practices.
