TikTok and musical.ly to Merge and Create a New Global App

It has been announced that the short-form video apps musical.ly and TikTok will merge to create a new global app. The upgraded TikTok platform will offer a unified user experience, a new logo and user interface, and enhanced video creation capabilities. This merger positions TikTok as the leading destination for short-form video content creation and consumption.

The upgraded app will provide users with a seamless and personalized viewing experience. Existing creators' accounts, content, and fan base will be automatically transferred to the new TikTok app, allowing them to reach a larger and more diverse global audience. The app incorporates the best features of both musical.ly and TikTok, with a feed that highlights the users' community and a "For You" feed that offers personalized video recommendations based on viewing preferences.

New features will also be introduced, including a "reaction" feature that allows users to react to their friends' videos directly from their phones, enhanced creative tools like interactive gesture filters, VR-type filters activated by blinking, and green screen-like background effects.

Alex Zhu, co-founder of musical.ly and Senior Vice President of TikTok, expressed excitement about this new chapter and the shared mission of both platforms to create a community where everyone can be a creator. The new TikTok app aims to inspire users with compelling content, provide better ways to connect fans and creators, and offer easy-to-use video capturing and editing tools that empower creativity.

TikTok is committed to creating a positive environment for users and creators. In addition to the enhanced user experience, the app will launch a safety center dedicated to providing tips and resources for a safe and welcoming online experience. A digital wellbeing feature will also be introduced to manage screen time.

TikTok is now available to new users worldwide via the App Store or Google Play. Existing musical.ly users will automatically upgrade to TikTok when they update the current app. This merger expands the network of TikTok and musical.ly, making it available in app stores across North America, Latin America, EMEA, Asia, and other regions.
