National PTA Partners with TikTok for Online Safety Workshops
National PTA is excited to announce a new partnership with TikTok as part of its PTA Connected initiative. This collaboration aims to help parents understand how their teenagers are using TikTok and educate families about safety on the app. The goal is to encourage open and ongoing conversations between parents and teens to ensure responsible and productive use of social media.
As part of this collaboration, 30 local PTAs across the country have been awarded a grant of $1,000 each to host family workshops on online safety. These workshops will take place on Safer Internet Day, February 11, 2020.
The workshops will include a student panel discussion on online safety and digital citizenship. Parents and teens will also learn about the safety settings and privacy tools available within TikTok. Additionally, they will participate in a guided activity that highlights the creative expression aspect of TikTok. The workshops will introduce PTA Connected resources, such as the Smart Talk, an interactive tool developed by National PTA and Symantec, which facilitates ongoing conversations about digital well-being and technology use.
TikTok is thrilled to partner with National PTA to provide these workshops for families. The app has implemented various features to ensure community safety, and the workshops will serve as an opportunity for parents to learn about TikTok, the safety center resources, and the tools and settings that allow users to control their app experience.
National PTA launched the PTA Connected initiative in 2018 to address the growing needs and interests of parents in the digital space. The initiative aims to deepen parents' understanding of digital safety tools and resources, engage PTAs, schools, and communities in promoting best practices, and generate collective impact. Symantec is the presenting and founding sponsor of the initiative, with additional founding sponsors including Facebook, Google, AT&T, and supporting sponsors TikTok and Life360.
Parenting in the digital age can be complex, and National PTA is committed to supporting families in navigating the online world. Through the PTA Connected initiative, the association aims to explore and address online safety concerns, provide tools and research, and encourage dialogue to ensure the safe and positive use of internet-connected devices and social media among youth.
National PTA is a nonprofit association that advocates for the educational success of children and promotes family engagement in schools. Membership is open to anyone who wants to make a difference in the education, health, and welfare of children and youth. For more information, visit PTA.org.
