Juneteenth: Celebrating the End of Slavery in the United States
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, is a significant day for African Americans as it marks the end of legalized slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had granted freedom to African Americans in 1863, it took two more years for the news to reach the last group of enslaved African Americans in Texas. This day symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States.
On the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, people from all races and backgrounds come together to celebrate, educate, and advocate for equality. It is a day to remember the freedoms that all people living in the United States are entitled to.
TikTok is dedicated to promoting awareness and understanding of Juneteenth and Black history. Users can find a dedicated page in the app with resources to learn more about the holiday, informative videos from creators, and links to social justice organizations. TikTok is also partnering with BLKFREEDOM.org, a digital commemoration of Juneteenth, to connect users to a special initiative launched by Black museums and historical institutions.
The initiative includes a video presentation featuring Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Johnnetta Cole, an anthropologist and educator, and Lonnie G. Bunch III, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. This presentation will highlight the significance of emancipation.
TikTok recognizes Juneteenth as a day of celebration, reflection, learning, and action for African Americans. It stands with those who acknowledge the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement and are committed to fighting systemic racism.
