TikTok Collaborates with RAINN to Support Sexual Assault Awareness Month
At TikTok, they prioritize self-expression and strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for their community members to share their experiences, including difficult conversations surrounding sexual assault. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, they acknowledge the important discussions taking place on their platform regarding sexual violence, recovery, and advocacy.
They have been working closely with experts to enhance their understanding of sexual assault and trauma, as well as to establish a supportive space for survivors. As a result, they are now introducing new resources developed in collaboration with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). Their objective is to ensure that support is readily available to anyone in need and to educate the broader community on this critical issue.
To create a welcoming environment for survivors who wish to share their stories, it is crucial that they feel safe from abuse and alienation. Therefore, they are partnering with RAINN to develop educational content within their Discover page for this month. This content will cover topics such as sexual violence, prevention, and healing.
The theme for this year's Sexual Assault Awareness Month, "We Can Build Safe Online Spaces," deeply resonates with them. As a global platform, they are committed to taking measures that maintain TikTok as a space where survivors can find support and community. Throughout the month, their Discover page will provide tips for supporting survivors and direct access to the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE or online.rainn.org).
Creating safe online spaces requires understanding where conversations are taking place and meeting survivors where they are. To achieve this, they have implemented permanent public service announcements on hashtags related to consent and other relevant topics. These announcements aim to foster supportive conversations and connect their community to helpful resources available on their Safety Center.
"We are proud to partner with TikTok in educating more people about the realities of sexual violence and providing resources. As individuals increasingly turn to platforms like TikTok for information sharing, it is crucial that the content is reliable and non-harmful. We are excited to share our resources with a global audience and contribute to TikTok remaining a safe and positive platform for critical conversations." - Heather Drevna, Vice President of Communications, RAINN
In the coming months, they will be introducing additional permanent resources within their app to assist survivors seeking confidential help, information, and services.
As a reminder, TikTok strictly prohibits content that depicts or supports sexual violence, including non-consensual intimate imagery, hacked imagery, and any attempt to glorify rape and sexual assault. They have recently refreshed their policies to create a space where survivors can share their stories or find community without fear of further harassment. Their commitment is to consistently and equitably enforce their policies against content that exploits sexual violence or accounts that engage in harassing behaviors.
As they continue to collaborate with experts and refine their approach to providing community resources, their goal is to empower survivors and contribute to a culture with fewer victims, not just in April but throughout the year.
