TikTok's Commitment to Election Integrity and Safety
TikTok is dedicated to supporting its community during the US elections by providing access to authoritative information and ensuring the integrity of its platform. While TikTok is not primarily focused on political debates or real-time news, they understand the importance of providing accurate information to users engaging in relevant conversations.
To prevent the spread of misleading information, TikTok has implemented policies that prohibit misinformation, disinformation, and manipulated media. They have also launched an Elections Safety Center to increase transparency and provide guidance on how their policies apply to various scenarios. For example, they remove content that seeks to intimidate voters or suppress voting, and they do not tolerate content or accounts that incite violence.
To ensure the accuracy of content, TikTok works closely with fact-checking partners who are readily available during this critical time. If false or manipulated videos are identified, they promptly remove them. In light of the upcoming Election Day, they will be partnering with fact checkers to reduce the visibility of content that prematurely claims victory before results are confirmed by The Associated Press. If claims cannot be verified or fact-checking is inconclusive, they will limit the distribution of such content. Additionally, they will add a banner directing viewers to their election guide for content that contains unverifiable claims about voting, premature declarations of victory, or attempts to discourage voting by exploiting COVID-19 as a voter suppression tactic.
Starting from November 3, TikTok will enhance their election guide with new and timely resources. These resources will include information on polling locations, state voter registration requirements, and more, provided by the US Election Assistance Commission (EAC). They will also provide the Election Protection Hotline number in multiple languages and offer a video call option for American Sign Language to assist the community in case of voting difficulties.
To keep users informed, TikTok is collaborating with The Associated Press to provide access to their interactive map, which displays live results for races at the federal and state levels, including the US president, Congress, governor, and ballot initiatives. This way, viewers can easily access up-to-date results regardless of when they watch the video.
Furthermore, TikTok will include commonly asked questions and answers from the National Association of Secretaries of State in their election guide. These resources will cover topics such as voting by mail or in-person, the compilation of election results, and what to expect during the counting process.
TikTok's election guide can be accessed through their Discover page, election-related search results, and videos posted by verified political accounts. TikTok is a platform where millions of Americans express their creativity and connect with others. While they often focus on lighthearted content, they recognize the significance of current events and are committed to supporting their community during these momentous times while maintaining the integrity of their platform.
