TIKTOK SHOP IS GETTING OUT OF HAND
Introduction
I have a love-hate relationship with TikTok, meaning I love it and hate it. Actually, I don't even love it; I kind of mediocrely like it but also intensely hate it. One thing that has become really intense over the past year is TikTok Shop. I'm not talking about ads or influencers promoting external brands; I'm talking about TikTok Shop itself.
It's kind of an okay thing in the sense that small businesses can use it to advertise their products. It works for many, but I specifically want to talk about those who get on there and just sell crap, acting like it's the best thing that ever happened.
People see how many sales an item gets, and it becomes a non-stop trend. For those who don't know, TikTok Shop works similarly to Instagram's shopping feature. As a creator, I could open my own TikTok Shop, like selling hand sanitizer, and doing live streams or creating TikTok videos linking to my shop. I make a commission from those products. It's utilized by beauty influencers, chef influencers, and more. Many well-known brands are also on TikTok Shop. However, the issue is that everyone is selling AliExpress drop shipping products.
Drop shipping is when you sell products you don't actually have in stock. I could order hand sanitizers from AliExpress, only buying stock when someone orders it and having it shipped directly to them. Many TikTok Shop products are just items from AliExpress, leading to the selling of low-quality products at inflated prices.
Some of the most frustrating products are viral lights, which influencers claim have revolutionized their lives. These lights have been around forever, but calling them "viral" makes them seem special. Similar overhyped items include bubble guns, screwdriver sets, and mini handheld fans. People are acting like these are revolutionary products when they're just common items.
The overuse of terms like "viral" and exaggerated reviews for regular products like fans, tools, and even toilet paper makes me question the authenticity of TikTok Shop promotions. It feels like everything is about making a quick buck by overhyping everyday items.
Another widespread item is the migraine cap, which many claim can cure headaches without medication. These caps are also available on AliExpress for much cheaper. Similarly, influencers endorse specific styles of underwear, often using hyperbolic language to describe their effectiveness.
Lastly, many live streams just feature items spinning on platforms, with links popping up for the products. Some even sell food items. It's one of the things ruining the app, making it unbearable to even scroll through it.
In conclusion, TikTok Shop has become an overwhelming flood of overhyped and often low-quality products, making the app frustrating to use. Let me know your thoughts on TikTok Shop down below. See you in the next one.
